Billionaire serial entrepreneur Richard Branson says that because of AI-related technological unemployment, "basic minimum earnings," or a universal basic income, should be instituted "so that there is nobody that is having to sleep on the street." Universal basic income is a cash distribution irrespective of employment status. Universal basic income was first introduced by U.S. Founding Father Thomas Paine, who proposed providing every citizen of the U.S. some cash amount every year in order to ensure that they were able to take care of basic needs. It’s been instituted by some countries over the years, with varying success. Martin Luther King, Jr., stated that he thought it made sense to abolish poverty directly through a guaranteed income. Universal basic income could be a long or short-term solution to jobs lost through the 4th Industrial Revolution that’s now being driven by Artificial Intelligence.
